The start of the project

This is the story of a boat building project by me (Alan Churchward) and my friend Paul Lewis, not forgetting our very supportive wives - Sheila & Anne respectively. As has been said "Behind every man stands an even better woman".

We had been looking around for some time for a suitable day boat.Eventually we settled on John Welsford's 'Pathfinder' because we liked its size, lines and relatively simple construction http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz/

We had each previously built one of Joel White's double ended 'Shearwaters' under the able direction of Julian Burn of 'Sail & Oar' in Totnes, Devon, UK http://www.sailoar.co.uk/ and had really enjoyed indulging in some exciting sailing and long distance rowing. However, we wanted something capable of coastal hopping and there were all those exciting "Raids" beckoning in Scotland, Finland and elsewhere.

So it was that we purchased the plans from Fyne Boats at Windermere in the English Lake District http://www.fyneboatkits.com/ in September 2004 but it wasn't until early February 2005 that we made the first trip to Robbins in Bristol to get their Elite marine ply!
